Position at Live Oak UU Fellowship:
Part-time Teacher -- Children's Religious Education

The Live Oak UU Fellowship is seeking a part- time teacher for our Children's Religious Education program. Live Oak UU, an emerging congregation of the UUA (Unitarian Universalist Association) is located in Alameda, (1300 Grand Street, one block from Central Ave.) We have a Religious Education Committee and volunteers who will support this position. We also have a board of trustees committed to the growth of the Religious Education Program and to building a multigenerational congregation.

Supervised By:
Children's Religious Education Committee (CRE)

Basic Purpose:
To provide a structured, caring environment that nurtures each child and provides opportunities for religious discovery and personal growth. With your help, we hope to grow the Children's RE program, providing an environment where our children look forward to coming on Sundays.

Our goals for the program:

•  To teach our young people about our Unitarian Universalist heritage and principles
•  To acquaint our young people with the values, beliefs and history of other religions.
•  To foster a feeling of community among our children for our church and for the world at large.
•  To respect the earth and the interdependence of its living systems.

Our CRE Committee will select and provide the curricula for the class. The class size varies, but is small – usually 3 to 7 children, ranging in age from 5 years to 12 years.

Responsibilities:

•  Read each week's lesson plan and prepare for the activities and stories suggested
•  Maintain a safe and loving environment for the children and youth
•  Keep a record of the children present each Sunday
•  Report any issues or concerns to the CRE Committee

Time/Hours:

Position is for 8 hours per month and begins September, 2011, or when a qualified candidate is selected. We offer a salary that meets the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) fair compensation guidelines. Hours include two Sunday afternoons a month (approximately 3:30-5:30 p.m. on the first and third Sundays of every month) plus up to four hours (each month) on your own to plan and prepare for the week's lesson.

Compensation:
$18-20/hour, commensurate with experience, skills, and abilities.

Qualifications:

The CRE teacher must be an adult, preferably with experience working successfully with children. S/he should have knowledge of and affinity for Unitarian Universalist principles and processes, leadership and communication skills, creativity and humor and must have the ability to work with people of varying ages and perspectives.

Safety:
The candidate selected will be asked to provide information to allow a standard background check. In addition, to ensure the safety of both the children and the adults who supervise them, we require two people (teacher, plus a teacher's assistant) to be with the children at all times. The CRE Committee will make itself available to the teacher to discuss any concerns.

Evaluation:
The CRE Committee will review goals and progress of the CRE program with the Religious Educator quarterly: January, April, August and November.

The success of the CRE program and the teacher will be measured based upon the following:

• Quality of classroom experience for children and volunteers
• Occasional assessment from children and their parents

Hiring Timeline: Apply as soon as possible.  We will receive applications until the position is filled.

To apply: Please send a letter of application and a resume to: lisasfry@gmail.com or to
